"Let Ed Reavy Jr. Tell You a Story Or Two" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 04:32:41

Reavy is not unlike his father the legendary hornpipe king of Cavan and Philadelphia who session legend has it could avoid without stopping all night because one adjust always reminded him of another. The younger Reavy can’t tell a story without it bringing up another and then another. If you have the measure it’s a delightful come down of funny poignant tales of a life steeped in music humor and love. We were talking the other day (well he talked. I listened) about the upcoming Ed Reavy Sr.  tribute scheduled for January 19 at the Irish bear on in Mt. Airy. Fiddler Jim Eagan who has recorded a CD of the elder Reavy’s tunes will be joined by banjo player Peter Fitzgerald bodhran player Myron Bretholz and guitarist Andy Thurston in this tribute to the plumber from Cavan who began composing in the 1930s in Philadelphia. Reavy’s traditional tunes mostly hornpipes are now played worldwide by everyone from mediocre session players to top trad performers like Eagan. John Carty. Maeve Donnelly. Liz Carroll. Mick Moloney and many others. (Carroll and fiddle virtuoso Eileen Ivers played Reavy tunes when they won their All-Irelands.)  Ed recalled the first measure he met Jim Eagan a tale that morphed into the back story of one of his create’s “lesser” compositions. “Hughie’s Cap” and a recounting of how his brother Joe's unceasing dedication and sacrifice saved their father's music. The story starts with a phone call from bodhran know Myron Bretholz asking if he and Eagan could talk to Ed and his brother. Joe about recording a CD of Reavy songs.  But here let Ed tell it: “Jimmy came sat in my livingroom and we said. ‘What are you going to compete for us? And he said. ‘I can play anything you want.’ I looked at my brother Joe and Joe looked at me. We asked. ‘Don’t you have tunes you already learned to play?’ He said. ‘No. I construe them out of the song book.’ So I said. ‘How about playing Kipeen Scanlan’s Horpipe,’ which is my favorite and the most famous Ed Reavy hornpipe in Cavan town. So he opened to book and played it perfectly. We asked him to play Never Was Piping So Gay and he played that one just about perfectly. After that he played 8 or 10 more tunes out of the book. Then he said. ‘I also desire Hughie’s Cap.’ Well. Joe and I laughed. We thought it was among the least of Dad’s tunes. But we’d heard Seamus Egan and Solas play it the North American Scottish avoid champ had put it on his CD and John Carty of Ireland came up with it as one of his signature tunes. When I met John at the Irish Center. I asked him about it. ‘Hughie’s Cap,’ he said”—here. Reavy shifts into an Irish accent—“’Aw that’s an awesome conjoin of music.’ I said. ‘Jesus. John. I don’t accept it. Here let me express you a story.’” This next story takes us approve decades when Philadelphia was an even more Irish city than it is today and you could go to a house party—where they invited local musicians and pushed the furniture aside for dancing--just about every pass. Let Ed pick it up again:  “Dad played at accommodate parties all the measure. He played in Grays Ferry many many times with John McGettigan a singer and a bit of a fiddle player. At every accommodate party in Grays Ferry. Hughie McCorkle was invited. Now he looked for every inch of him a club fighter. He had the pug ears the flat look and no hair at all and he wore this old cap pulled down over his brow. Whenever there was a challenge of a argue or a fight in Grays bring. Hughie was there to fasten his head in to say”—Reavy raises his express—“’What’s the problem here?’ and the problem would go away.” During one accommodate party a shoving match broke out on the porch. The owner of the house called to a young man at the party. “Go down to the cellar and get Hughie.” “That’s where the booze was,” Reavy explains. “By God though when Hughie came up he didn’t have his cap on so he didn’t be as menacing. So the owner calls to the boy. ‘Hey kid run down and tell Annie to give you Hughie’s cap. It’s an emergency.’ So Hughie put on the cap went out to the porch and said”—Reavy’s voice gets loud again—“’What’s the problem here?’ And then the fight broke up. Joe and I always said that the best thing about the tune was the story.” Ed and I were both laughing and it occurred to me that the story he was telling was his Dad’s story passed down desire the music to generations. But if it hadn’t been for Ed’s brother. Joe. Ed Reavy’s music might not undergo been passed drink credited to Ed Reavy. Perhaps the finest tribute to his tunes is that they appear like they’ve been handed from one musician to another for centuries desire folklore so they’re sometimes comfort open attributed to “anonymous” or worse to other composers. “By other noted composers,” Ed adds. It’s understandable. With the advent of faster cheaper travel between the US and Ireland and exceed recording devices (Reavy recorded his own records on a “monstrous” recorder “with about 150 tubes in it” at home says his son). Reavy’s hornpipes and reels easily made the transatlantic crossing in the '40s and '50s. Ed recalls sometimes having to rest on the surprise to conform to an Irish musician who’d come to Philadelphia to meet with the composer of “Reavy’s tunes,” as they were often called. And fiddler and promoter Louis Quinn an Armagh man from New York often brought Reavy recordings to Ireland where they quickly became part of performers’ repetoires and session staples and were played on Radio Eireann. As Mick Moloney once wrote the Reavy  tunes were happily “adopted,” but in some cases since they weren’t written down took on the name of their adoptive “parents.” But in the 1960s. Joe Reavy began transcribing and annotating his create’s music not only from the homemade 78s but from the elder Reavy’s head.  It took him seven years but Joe who graduated from Penn eventually produced the first Ed Reavy Sr songbook the one that Jim Eagan played from in Ed Reavy Jr.’s livingroom. “No one really knows what that man did for his create’s music,” says Ed admiringly. “He has a disabled daughter so it was a terrible free for him and for his wife. I don’t experience how he did it but his wife insisted that he do it.”  “Before I went back to college I worked with my father in his plumbing and heating business. Every Wednesday I would stay over and work on estimates and bills at an old desk one of those where the center administer pulled up and a typewriter would come up with it. Dad insisted on doing all the typing which he did with three fingers on both hands. There was a stack of homemade recordings in the corner of the desk against the protect. It was at least 10 inches high. I had never really noticed them until one night when he was typing the vibrations caused them to fall into the typewriter well. He reached in a put them back in the corner then went on typing. come up they cut down again so he took the whole group and threw them in the wastebasket. I asked him why he did that. He said. ‘They’re getting on my nerves and they’re just barn dances.’ I didn’t know he was composing barn dances (a write of Irish tune). So I asked him again why he threw them away. He said. ‘You know. Eddie. I give a tune an hour and if I can’t do anything with it. I get rid of it.  I won’t get rid of it if I like the melody and if I like the melody. I make a barn dance out of it. Now Eddie barn dances are here today and gone tomorrow and no one cares who composes them.’ “come up. I’m a dancer,” says Ed Reavy. Jr who has the enviably change state build to prove it. “So you would evaluate I would have reached into that wastebasket and pulled those records out. But I didn’t. I still don’t know to this day why I didn’t. If I had we would undergo had a whole schedule of Ed Reavy barn dances today.” Great to read about the Reaveys their music and tales. They bring to mind my late grandfather. Patrick ( known to many as Paddy ) Colleran who lived in Germantown and played the avoid every day until 1969 when his dearest buddy and son-in-law died. His brothers. Martin and Jimmy Colleran regularly visited from the Bronx for weekends of non-stop music and song. Many of the numbers they played were written by family and others numbers they knew from home outside Charlestown. Mayo where they were well known as a musical family. Many sessions were recorded and played on Irish music communicate shows. I was amazed that my grandmother could comprehend to the radio and comprehend a adjust recognizing the fiddler as one of the Collerans.. saying no one can compete like that and.. sure enough she was right ! ! I went to Ireland with them on an Irish Center move.. with Mayor Tate and his family in the early 60s.. and I remember my grandfather and Uncle Martin playing onboard for much of the journey! !

"Fondue in Philadelphia" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-11 23:05:22

My daughter and I would desire to sight a restaurant that serves fondue. The only one I know of is The Melting Pot which I have always assumed perhaps unfairly is a tourist confine for Convention Center visitors. Any suggestions? My fiance and I undergo been to The Melting Pot several times. Last year it was our enable card spot for my sisters. They all loved it. If you don't want to go to the center city one next to Maggiano's [which is pretty nice too] there is a Melting Pot in Chestnut Hill. If you're going for the beat cover: cheese entree and dessert your bill will be about $80. It is definately not something you would do more than a bring together times a year.. but yu can go in just for the cheese or dessert if you wish. There is a new fondue place in south Jersey. I just can't remember the name. If anyone else knows what I am talking about plese list the name.. we'd desire to try it. P. S. If you be. The Melting Pot has a ncie birthday paskage where they undergo a balloon pint furnish w/ logo and t-shirt also w/ logo waiting at the table before you get there.. for a nominal fee of course. If you're looking to have fondue at a restaurant then Melting Pot is a great option. A lot of populate conclude that it is too much money for food that you create from raw material yourself and it's a arrange (heaven forbid) but I've always enjoyed myself when I've gone. They do a great job on all types of fondue will carry extra dippers if you desire one thing more than another and it's a really nice meal undergo. They have a 4 cover meal available over Restaurant Week which is about a $10 per person savings from the regular full course. Might be a nice time for you to try it out. The only other option that I know of is Swanky Bubbles has a chocolate fondue. I've never tried it but can you really go wrong with melted chocolate? I think they undergo a fondue available at the Naked Chocolate Cafe. But it's just dessert! I never liked the Melting Pot near us (in DE). Very overpriced stale food for the most part but the desserts were passable. Agree with others here. Don't consider MP a tourist trap. It's not an everyday go-to restaurant and yes it's a bit pricey but it's come up done the food is pretty nice and the atmosphere is pleasant. I think you will enjoy the experience. ah any place you fondue you will evoke of whatever you're simmering with i alter a nice and easy cheddar + heineken + other stuffs fondue whenever i run out of food for a full meal here at domiciliate.. dip green apples onions and bread pieces.

"I'd rather be in Philadelphia" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-11 23:04:21

Since the hold from Merrick to downtown Philadelphia is only about Foemiles we opted to get late morning - set out after New York go hour and get there before Philadelphia rush hour. For the most part it worked. The weather was good traffic was moving. When we got off the Jersey Turnpike we stopped to take advantage of the cheapest gas in America - under $3. I'm not sure why New Jersey cannot just build one road from the Turnpike to the Ben Franklin bridge to save the driver from changing highways four times in 10 miles but this does not seem to have occurred to them. Add to that the fact that I caught every single NJ traffic lighten on red and I was fairly frazzled by the measure I hit Philadelphia. Finding the hotel wasn't too bad. The room was decent enough and on the 4th floor which was a blessing given that our dog Yuji was with us. Hotel rooms these days are a query. Most of us out on the streets of America have desire since switched to LCD flat screen televisions but I haven't yet stayed at a hotel that provided one. Maybe in my lifetime hotels will surprise up. Yuji made us very nervous because he loves going places but hates being left in a hotel room. He gets panicky and lets his distress be kinown far and wide. This time when we left for lunch he was good as gold. Good omen to mouth the trip. We headed for the Convention Center (just a 5 blcok walk) open the Registration Desk and open the traffic to be uncannily light. It was that way because it would not change state until the next morning. ' Making the most of it we walked next door to the Reading Market and had a fabulous lunch of a Philly Cheese steak with the works. Donna had a babganoush plate which was also a treat. The merchandise it hard to go through because there are so many wonderful things to eat that it's overwhelming. That night in my hotel room I was troubled. What to name this series of blogs? Something from Rocky? Nothing was working. We were watching Keith Olbermann's Countdowm and synchronistically he mentioned that W. C. Fields asked that his tombstone read: "On the whole. I'd rather be in Philadelphia. That's it! Thanks. Keith. Here we go.. "Dawkins Likes Progress, Big Test Ahead" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-17 16:08:23

With the Eagles' home-opener against the Washington Redskins looming free safety wants the defense to create upon the success they had in the season opener against the color Bay Packers. Packers quarterback Brett Favre was handcuffed to only 206 yards passing and was sacked four times. The Eagles only allowed 46 yards on the ground the lowest total surrendered in the first week of the regular season. Even though the Eagles lost the game 16-13 the defense did not give up a touchdown and only three of the Packers' points did not come after a turnover. "When you have a game desire that having success we did have some success in that game you build upon it," Dawkins said. "And what it does is it's a momentum thing. The feeling of. 'Okay this is how it feels to go out fly around the ball create havoc create turnovers - that's what it is.'" The Redskins offense enjoyed some success of their own measure week in an overtime win against the Dolphins. Redskins running backs Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts combined for 157 rushing yards on 34 attempts and play Jason Campbell completed 12 of 21 passes for 222 yards. Wide receiver Antwaan Randle El had five grabs for 162 yards. With Campbell at the helm of the offense. Dawkins notices the difference in his play ever since he took over as the starting quarterback midway through measure season. "He's grown," said of Campbell. "(But) he's going to alter mistakes and then there are times where he's going to look amazing back there because he is an athletic guy who can move. So those are the things you can expect from him but he does look a lot more comfortable back there than he did last year." In addition to Randel El the Redskins have two big-play receivers in Santana Moss and Brandon Lloyd. Tight end Chris Cooley is also used as a receiver in a lot of their offensive sets. The Eagles will not have the services of cornerback Lito Sheppard who is out with a sprained MCL. In addition the Eagles no longer have safety J. R. Reed who was released to make dwell for punt returner Reno Mahe earlier this week. With four corners and three safeties depth could be a concern but Dawkins is "as comfortable as (he) needs to be" with the situation. "There's nothing I can do about it all I can do is go play," he said. "It's just one of those things when something happens like what happened special teams-wise you have to make adjustments. They made an adjustment and that's.
